Project Mascot Name Suggestion

“CLEO the Caretta project eTwinning” creative learning program for children, aims at raising awareness on vulnerable sea turtle species, their natural habitats, the threats they encounter, as well as the negative impact of uncontrolled human activity on marine environment (focus on marine litter).

Pollution in the Atlantic Ocean kills the Carettas (sea turtles)

All this garbage was found in the intestine of only one sea turtle (Chelonia mydas) during necropsy. Among other materials impossible to determine, inflatable party balloons (with various colors), nylon, cigarette butts, bottle caps, straws and various plastic bags were identified. All of this formed fecalomas (cakes of dry, rock-hard stool) that caused severe inflammation and obstruction of the bowel. To carry out this photograph, the garbage was separated from the fecalomas and washed with water.

.

But the turtle didn't die quickly! Unable to carry out the entire cycle of the digestive system, she withered away without eating for days, losing weight until she stopped swimming. In addition to losing weight and body score, his organs atrophied. Then, algae grew on the surface of its body, and finally after much suffering, the animal died from energy depletion.

.

All this garbage doesn't necessarily have to be dumped on the beach, the sea, or a seafront promenade to cause this tragic story. Garbage thrown in ditches or on the streets ends up being carried by the rains to water courses and finally, to the sea. Garbage thrown on the sidewalks of our coastal cities can also be carried overboard by the wind. Balloons left in the wind can also end up at sea. Nylon used in fishing also ends up in the sea when the hook sticks in rocks and the fisherman simply cuts it.

Welcome all of you to the world of Carettas!
